Custom Poppy Door

Minneapolis, Minnesota
Commissioned architectural stained glass
Design: Josie Lewis
Fabrication: Potekglass

Sector: Residential
Technique: Leaded

Created for the entry door of a newly constructed home near Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis, this custom stained glass panel was developed in collaboration with designer Josie Lewis. Lewis approached Potekglass with her original composition of a single poppy rising gracefully across the panel, and our team translated the design into a fully realized stained glass work.

The window contains 509 individual pieces of glass cut from 38 unique sheets, including two sheets developed specifically for the project in our studio. One was hand-painted and kiln fired to capture the intricate details at the center of the poppy blossom. Another was kiln formed to create a delicate white speckled effect surrounding the painted elements.

The panel was assembled using traditional lead came construction, with each piece individually fitted, leaded, and soldered. Structural reinforcing was integrated after glazing to provide long-term stability while remaining visually unobtrusive.

The completed window was installed directly into the home's custom entry door, where the poppy serves as both a focal point and a permanent piece of architectural art.
