Art In the Shop: "Girl Interrupted" (Featured Artwork)

"Girl Interrupted"

28" x 24"

Malcom Potek

I am so pleased with how this sweet little window came about. A neighborhood client came to the shop wanting something to energize a stairwell window that looked out into the neighbor’s yard. They liked the look of mostly clear glass and bevels. In looking for inspiration, I visited their nearby Tudor Revival home and so started the rabbit hole. The easy part was going to the source and looking at actual Tudor windows of the 1500s.

This led to the discovery of Essential Vermeer, a website dedicated to detailing every aspect of the artists' paintings. I found my inspiration in "Girl Interrupted in Her Music.” I adapted the design to fit the window specs and available bevels, and voila – Girl interrupted was created.

Art in the World: KéKé Cribbs

KéKé Cribbs, a self-taught artist born in Colorado in 1951, is no stranger to the story of travel. Being one of five children transplanted to Ireland for her mother’s graduate studies in Yeats, she ended up moving 24 times in 24 years before eventually settling on Whidbey Island, but not before having lived in Ireland, France, Corsica and New Mexico. She attended Pilchuck Glass School in 1984 and later taught there. In addition to also teaching at Penland School of Crafts, she started a Glass program at Swain School of Design, which later became Southeastern Massachusetts University (SMU), now UMass at Dartmouth.

Cribbs’ artwork centers on a combination of glass mosaic work and reverse painting vitreous enamels on glass. Utilizing a variety of ceramics, metals, and fibers in two and three dimensional mixed media artwork, she explores the narrative found within mythical and fairytale themes, as well as more abstract ideas involving light and space.

Of her older work, involving forms such as canteens, baskets, high-heel shoes or more commonly, boats, she says,

“All of these forms represent journeys – the canteen and basket forms are containers which one would carry on a journey to hold water, the very essence of life. The narratives depicted on these forms represent the choices we make in this life; small vignettes into fictional lives that may remind one of a surreal dream or experience, a palpitation of the heart, a frozen moment in the emotional adventure of life.”
