Art in the Shop: "Interrupted Solar Eclipse" (Featured Artwork)

"Interrupted Solar Eclipse" by Malcom Potek

Fused glass (7" x 19" x 1)

I love a design challenge and found one in the new class I designed for the shop "Creating Custom Sheets".

Like most, I am fascinated by cosmic experience and have started to learn more about how eclipses and solar flares have been interpreted through history and how they affect people's lives today. This was the inspiration for this scalloped oval dish I produced.

Using powders, stringers and reactive glasses I wanted to play with various layers to give the impression of solar movement across the sky and the little digital anomalies it creates in our lives. At the end of the day I just think it is a pretty little dish.

Art in the World: Tom Fruin

Tom Fruin, known for his large scale installations, is a contemporary American sculptor born in 1974 in Los Angeles. A 1996 graduate from the University of California, Santa Barbara, he currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York City.

While Fruin utilizes a variety of mediums in his installations, his most commonly used materials include steel and highly colored plexiglass. Driven by making art publicly accessible and sustainable by working with reclaimed materials and alternative energy, Fruin creates monumental sculptures referencing local building structures.

The Watertower series is Fruin’s largest installation to date, and it is installed across multiple rooftops around the country, including in New York City. Other large scale work has been exhibited in public plazas in Prague, Vienna, Copenhagen and throughout the United States.
