Art in the Shop: Window at Prospect Refuge

Featured artwork

We love collaborative work at Potekglass, and this project was no exception. Victoria Saas of Prospect Refuge asked us to build a 33 1/4" x 76" window for her home. Some of the inspiration art came from middle aged cathedral windows that were produced from glass left over from the elegant rose windows. These transept windows are super playful and were a hoot to try and figure out. Our version used an array of transparent and opaque glasses to build on this playful effect. Thanks to everyone at Prospect Refuge for their help bringing this window to life.

Art in the World: Lori Greene

Our nation's first permanent Memorial to Survivors of Sexual Violence stands on the banks of the Mississppi River in Boom Island Park, telling a story of community support for victim-survivors. The memorial project was led by Break the Silence, a Minneapolis-based organization whose mission is to support survivors of sexual violence by striving to end rape culture and hold perpetrators accountable.

Lori Greene, mosaic artist, sculptor, and owner of Mosaic on a Stick, created the mosaic panels that sit at the center of the memorial. Lori works with and for the community, and has over twenty years of experience making outdoor public art mosaics. Engraved on the mosaics' tall granite pillars are three promises:

We believe you.

We stand with you.

You are not alone.

Lori is well-known for creating pieces about healing and recovering from trauma, and as a multiracial (African American, Native American- Mississippi band of Choctaw, and Caucasian) woman, she brings a unique voice and perspective to public art that has not always been represented. Lori's work is bold, colorful, and unapologetic. Patterns, symbols, and motifs reflecting her intersecting cultural identities interweave themselves throughout her works like a visual language. Within them lies stories of survival, interconnection, resilience, and a deep connection to the ancestors.
